North Devon Glaucoma Patient Support Group
The North Devon Glaucoma Support Group was formed in 2015 and is led by Mr Whittaker, Consultant Ophthalmologist.
Receiving a diagnosis for such conditions can cause significant anxiety for patients, relatives and carers and some find it difficult to focus on the questions they need to ask at the time of their consultation in hospital. This may lead to people feeling isolated and distressed and may even cause patients to take their medication incorrectly.
The meetings are educational and structured, consisting of presentations on a variety of glaucoma-related topics to increase patient’s understanding of their condition. The talks are delivered by clinicians involved in the hospital glaucoma service , as well as by external speakers, and are followed by a question and answer session.
The support group meetings are held 3-4 times every year at the Park Hotel in Barnstaple and are supported by the International Glaucoma Association. Funding for the facilities comes from charitable sources, but the meetings are free. Flyers advertising the venue and dates for forthcoming meetings are given out to new and existing patients and are attached to noticeboards in the hospital, the SeeHear Centre and Age Concern.
