Medical Assessment Unit (MAU)

The Medical Assessment Unit (MAU) is on Level 1 of North Devon District Hospital. It provides specialised assessment and care for all medical patients who require admission to the hospital.

On admission each patient will be reviewed by experienced nursing staff, shortly followed by a team of medics, including junior doctors and registrars, with the final plan of care being decided by the consultant physician of the day.

If your hospital stay is longer than 24- 48 hours, you will be transferred to another medical ward to continue your treatment.

Visiting times for Medical Assessment Unit (MAU)

COVID-19: Visiting restrictions at our hospitals from 12pm Tuesday 24 March

We continue to take all necessary precautions to protect our patients and staff during the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

To reduce the risk to patients, staff and any visitors and maintain the Government’s direction on social isolation, from 12pm on Tuesday 24 March 2020 no visiting will be allowed at North Devon District Hospital and South Molton Community Hospital unless there are:

  • Specific reasons of safety (dementia or learning disability where anxiety would be increased significantly)
  • Inpatients under the age of 18 years old (one parent/guardian only)
  • A patient receiving end of life care

Even under these circumstances you should not visit if you have a new, persistent cough or high temperature (of 37.8 degrees centigrade or higher).

Additionally, if you live with someone who has symptoms you will need to stay at home for 14 days starting from the day the first person in your house developed symptoms and should not visit.

This restriction will be in place for at least the next 2 weeks and will be reviewed daily after Monday 6 April.

We would like to thank everyone for their support and understanding.
