Phlebotomy Service

A phlebotomy service is available for both in-patients and out-patients at North Devon Hospital.

Out-patient Clinic opening hours are Monday to Friday from 09:00am to 16:50pm (last admission).

Ward rounds start at 08:00am Monday to Friday. On Saturdays and Bank Holidays the ward service operates from 08:00am to 12:00am. FOR MAIN BUILDING IN-PATIENTS ONLY.

Ward based request forms should be completed and put out by 08:00am so that samples can be taken by the phlebotomy team on their early morning rounds. Requesting practitioners are reminded that a Hospital or NHS number as well as Name and Date of Birth are clearly written on request forms as per Pathology Specimen Acceptance Policy. In addition Group & Save requests must also have a full address and GP details. See Policy here

Medical staff may be required to take their own blood samples if the Phlebotomists’ ward round has been completed or if busy taking out-patient samples.

Persons taking blood samples must wear gloves as per Trust Policy. If splashes of blood are likely, aprons and protective goggles should be worn.

Discard needles and holders at once into a “sharps” bin. NEVER RE-SHEATHE NEEDLES – this is the commonest cause of inoculation injury. See Infection Control Manual here (Manual is only available to NDHT staff).

The phlebotomy service is managed by the Outpatient’s Department and can be found in Outpatients C near to main reception on Level 2. Contact number for the phlebotomy room is extension 2343.
