About us

The Library facilities are open to all NHS staff, and students on placement, working for Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust, Devon Partnership Trust, Hospice and SWASFT staff working in the North Devon area may also use the library. Staff not employed by the NHS but working in NHS organisations can also register.

Visitors may use the library for reference purposes and photocopying at the discretion of library staff. Private membership is also available.

Opening Hours – 8.30am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday

The Healthcare Library may be used outside staffed hours by obtaining the digital lock combination from either the Library staff, or the Sodexo Helpdesk and Porters’ Lodge on Level 2. Identification must be shown when requesting the combination.

To provide our user community with the best possible library and information service, within the resources available to us, thereby ensuring that all NHS staff and registered users have access to the healthcare knowledge base.

Services

Books for reference and loan.

Periodicals.

Photocopying facilities – charges of 5p per copy.

Databases. eg. Medline, EMBASE, BNI, CINAHL, PsycINFO, AMED, HMIC

24 hour access to computers.

Literature searches and database training.

Interlibrary Loans.

Loan Period

Books from Library stock are normally loaned for 4 weeks at a time but may be renewed if no one else is waiting for them. Healthcare library users can renew this loan period once by going to www.swims.nhs.uk and logging in, under My Account, with the library user barcode on their SWIMS card.

Journals, other than the current issue, are loaned for 7 days.

The Library Staff

Alison Cairns

Alison is the Library and Information Manager. She is happy working in NHS libraries after some time in public libraries. Her role involves the management of library and information services across the Trust including the library, on-line resources, literature searches, and finding evidence based information to support staff in their day to day work. She is keen to contact people and find out what they want from their NHS library. She is eager to meet people across the trust to share information about how the library can help them. She is happy to talk to groups of staff, attend meetings and provide information. Please contact her to find out more. She would love to hear from you with your thoughts about your library. Please ask. You may be amazed at what we already provide.

peter-cliffordPeter Clifford

Peter has an ASc Computer Programming & Analysis degree from Niceville Florida (US), a BSc Honours degree in Applied Computing from Staffordshire University (UK) and a postgraduate MSc Information and Library Studies degree from The Robert Gordon University (Scotland). He has held Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) since 2006. Hobbies are music, movies & books.

Mr Alan Pedlar

Alan is a full-time library assistant. He deals with a range of work, including the processing of most of the interlibrary loan requests, which are received both from our clients and from other libraries. Among his other interests, Alan is a keen family historian.

Talli is a part-time library assistant. Her role is customer focused aiming to help you find the information and library services you need quickly and professionally. Her work includes dealing with user enquires, inter-library loans, literature searching, as well as general library administration. Having worked in public libraries before, she enjoys working in the varied and interesting NHS library environment.
