Introducing Our Future Hospital Northern Devon
‘The biggest hospital building programme in a generation will help protect the NHS long into the future.’ Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock 2019
North Devon District Hospital (NDDH) has been selected as one of 21 sites in England included in the second wave of the Government’s investment programme for NHS acute hospitals – the Health Infrastructure Plan (HIP2).
The Trust’s response to this opportunity is:
Our Future Hospital.
Suzanne Tracey, joint chief executive of Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust (NDHT) and the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust (RD&E), said: ‘This is a once in a lifetime investment opportunity to support how we deliver care and we are really keen to work with our colleagues and community to develop our ambitions.’
What is Our Future Hospital all about?
Being included within this Government programme is an important vote of commitment for our hospital, and our Trust, and is likely to be the most significant investment in healthcare infrastructure for the population of Northern Devon since NDDH opened in 1979. This comes on the back of the Acute Services Review for Devon which confirmed in 2017 that urgent and emergency care and maternity services should continue to be provided at NDDH.
It’s an incredible opportunity to secure the investment to ensure we have fit for purpose facilities to deliver modern and digitally-enabled healthcare provision. The estates investment will also support us as we continue to develop our strategy for how we jointly deliver care across Northern and Eastern Devon building on recent clinical collaboration for key services.
What happens next?
We need to describe the investment we need to help us deliver our ambitions, and we will be doing this by developing a ‘full business case’ for submission. The first milestone we need to meet before this is to create a strategic outline case – this is where we make a case for change based on our three workstreams of clinical strategy; our estates – are they fit for purpose; and digitally connected care.
The Government’s plan is all about futureproofing ageing NHS infrastructure. A key part of the outline case has been commissioning an independent building survey of our current estate as we recognise the need to review our estates, alongside our clinical and digital strategies, to ensure our plans deliver the most modern and responsive healthcare. You can find out more about how we are building our case for change here.
We have identified five ambitions for the work we need to do:
What does the future of healthcare look like to you?
These ambitions are a good starting point, but as members of our community, we want to know what you think. Let us know – what do our ambitions mean to you?
You can share your thoughts and comments on our Get Involved page,
This is a rolling long term project and we will continue to update you with news and milestones as the programme progresses.
