Referral criteria

Referral to the NDHT Leg Ulcer Service should be as follows:

  • For unhealed lower leg wounds after 4 weeks treatment in primary care
  • For recurrence of previous leg ulcers – immediate referral on presentation to primary care

70-80% of leg ulcers are venous. 10-20% are of mixed venous/arterial. 10% are arterial and a small number are related to other causes. Due to the nature of the pathology the mixed and arterial leg ulcers would be referred on to specialist services eg vascular / Tissue Viability for the most appropriate treatment.
