North Devon COVID-19 Vaccination Centre

The North Devon COVID-19 Vaccination Centre is based at the North Devon Leisure Centre in Barnstaple. We are offering COVID-19 vaccination to local people in eligible groups. The centre is staffed by specially-trained vaccinators and support staff with help from volunteers.

Need to know before you go

  • Check your eligibility at https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/coronavirus-vaccination/who-can-get-the-vaccine/
  • To receive a booster dose, it must have been at least 3 months since your second dose
  • To receive a second dose, it must have been 8 weeks since your first dose if you are 18 or over, 12 weeks since your first dose if you are under 18
  • If you’ve had COVID-19 recently we may not be able to vaccinate you. Please see ‘Attending for vaccination’ below
  • Please bring your NHS number with you if you can, this really helps our team
  • Queues are likely. Please bear this in mind and wear clothing that will keep you warm
  • Our vaccination staff and volunteers are working as quickly as possible – please be patient
Booking an appointment

If you are eligible for vaccination, you can book an appointment via the National Booking Service website. You can also use the website to manage or cancel your appointment.

Anyone unable to book online can call 119 free of charge, anytime between 7am and 11pm seven days a week. You can ask someone else to do this for you if you prefer.

If you have difficulties communicating or hearing, or are a British Sign Language (BSL) user, you can use textphone 18001 119, call 119 BSL via the SignVideo app, or use the NHS BSL service at: signvideo.co.uk/nhs119.

If you have received your first vaccine dose but have not booked a second appointment,  please refer back to the online booking website at least 24 hours after your first appointment. From here, you will be able to book your second appointment.

Attending for vaccination

If you have recently had COVID-19, we may not be able to vaccinate you. If you have an appointment booked, please cancel or rearrange it through the National Booking Service website.

  • Aged 18 years and over – there must be a 28-day gap between first symptoms of COVID-19/date of positive PCR result if you had no symptoms and a COVID-19 vaccine.
  • Under 18s – there must be a 12-week gap between first symptoms of COVID-19/date of positive PCR result if you had no symptoms and a COVID-19 vaccine.

Please do not attend your vaccination if you have symptoms of COVID-19 or are self-isolating.

Please ensure you wear a face mask unless you have a valid exemption certificate.

In preparation for getting your vaccination, please wear loose fitting clothing.

Queues are likely, please wear clothing that will keep you warm when outside.

We understand that it may be difficult for some people to queue for long periods of time, particularly more frail older people. Our volunteers are managing the queues – please speak to someone if you need help.

Remember to eat and drink before you attend.

We ask that you do not arrive more than five minutes before your appointment time to avoid queues.

You may need to wait 15 minutes after your vaccination.

Please attend your appointment by yourself if possible. If you need physical, communication, or emotional support, someone from your household or support bubble can accompany you to your appointment. We can also help arrange translation or interpretation support if you need it.

Third primary dose for immunosuppressed people (not boosters)

Those with weakened immune systems are being offered a THIRD primary dose of COVID-19 vaccination instead of just two doses.

The third primary dose is NOT the same as a booster.

The third primary dose is a top up because while the first two doses will have offered some protection, they may not have generated a full immune response compared to those who do not have weakened immune systems.

The aim is to give people who have a weakened immune system a similar level of protection as someone without a weakened immune system who has had two doses.

A booster vaccination will be offered 6 months later.

Those who are eligible for a third primary dose are being identified and contacted by either their consultant or GP, who will refer them to the vaccination centre. Please wait for the NHS to contact you.

Your medical or nursing team would also be happy to discuss this with you at any upcoming appointments.

Translation and interpretation support

British Sign Language support is available – please speak to one of the vaccination team, who will assist you.

If you require a translator or interpreter for your COVID-19 vaccination appointment at the North Devon Leisure Centre, please let us know at least five working days before your appointment.

  • NEW park and ride coach service

A FREE park and ride coach service is available for people getting vaccinated at the North Devon Leisure Centre. Please use this wherever possible instead of parking at the Leisure Centre.

  • Bike facilities

Bike stands are available at the front entrance of the North Devon Leisure Centre.

Please do not go through the main entrance of the Leisure Centre. This entrance is for members of the public using the sports and leisure facilities of the Leisure Centre. Please walk round to the car park, where a volunteer marshall will direct you to the entrance for vaccination.

  • Drop-off

There is a drop-off area in front of the North Devon Leisure Centre.

Please do not go through the main entrance of the Leisure Centre. This entrance is for members of the public using the sports and leisure facilities of the Leisure Centre. Please walk round to the car park, where a volunteer marshall will direct you to the entrance for vaccination.

  • Car

You can plan your journey with Google Maps, or enter EX31 2AP into your sat nav.

You will be greeted by our volunteer marshals, who will show you where to park. The short stay area of Seven Brethren Car Park has been set aside for people arriving by car for vaccination. Please note that there is a charge for using the car park – see North Devon Council’s website for more information.

  • Bus

The nearest bus stop to North Devon Leisure Centre is Sticklepath Terrace (next to the Oliver Buildings/former Shapland and Petter factory) and is on many bus routes into and around Barnstaple.

North Devon Leisure Centre is roughly a 10-minute walk from Barnstaple Bus Station.

  • Unable to drive, get a lift or use public transport?

If you are unable to get a lift or access public transport, or there are no suitable public transport services in your area, you may be able to find transport via the network of voluntary organisations which operate across Devon.

There is no guarantee that transport will be available through voluntary schemes. All schemes operate differently, and there may be a charge for these services.
