Day 6 – Ian Roome

What do you do for the Trust?

I am the Head of the Fundraising and Volunteers for the Over and Above charity at the Trust.

Why did you join the Trust?

I joined to make the Seamoor Unit a reality by raising £2.5m so cancer and day treatment patients could receive their treatment in a purpose built unit with comfortable surroundings.

What makes you proud of your job?

I am proud of all our staff and the community of Northern Devon who support our charity to improve the facilities and services we offer to patients and their loved ones.

What is your highlight from 2017?

There are many things really, however helping to implement the volunteering program within the Trust and seeing the positive impact they are having on enhancing patient experiences whilst using our services. Another highlight is seeing how the SCBU Appeal as helped purchase state of the art equipment for use on our youngest patients.

What do you like the most about living in the South West?

I love living in North Devon because it is home to beautiful beaches, picturesque towns and some of the best ice-cream in the world. Maybe one of the best reasons North Devon is so great is because of the creamy and delicious Hockings ice-cream which is made here. You may be thinking, what’s all the fuss about! But anyone who has tasted this extraordinary ice-cream will without a doubt tell you it’s the best that they have ever had!

Favourite thing about the festive season?

I love seeing family and going for long walks in the crisp fresh air. Excellent if you have had too much gin the night before.

Favourite book/film?

I have lots of favourite films, however, I do like the classic The Shawshank Redemption – This is a movie about a man, Tim Robbins, who is wrongly convicted of killing his wife and her lover, and he is given a double life sentence in a maxim security, corrupt New England Prison. There he befriends Morgan Freeman, who plays another man with a life sentence, and the movie progresses with their life in prison. The cinematography is absolutely brilliant, and Morgan Freeman is excellent. The ending is very…very picture perfect, and the movie does an amazing job of showing how the outside world changes over time, while the walls of the prison are resistant to any time change.

If I can push it I also loved the series Breaking Bad.

Will you be making a New Year’s resolution? If so, what?

Last year I travelled through Europe on my BMW motorbike and would love to travel further in 2018 and visit many more countries, maybe by car this time. If I can turn it into a fundraising event I will.
