Equality & Diversity

Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust has a legal requirement to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion under the Equality Act 2010. The Act sets out the protected characteristics and the protections afforded them, which is the most significant piece of equality legislation to be introduced for many years. It is there to strengthen protection, promote equality and diversity and simplify the law. Ninety per cent of the Act came into force on 1 October 2010, the rest of it includes the Public Sector Equality Duty and came into effect in April 2011. One of the key changes under the Equality Act is that it extends the protected characteristics to include:

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender reassignment
  • Marriage and civil partnership
  • Pregnancy and maternity
  • Race
  • Religion or belief
  • Sex
  • Sexual orientation
