The pharmacy team at Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust (NDHT) is thrilled to have won a prestigious prize in the Health Service Journal (HSJ) Value Awards.
The team won the pharmacy and medicines optimisation category with a project entitled ‘medicines optimisation in orthopaedic enhanced recovery’.
This involved working with the multidisciplinary team in orthopaedics to reduce variation in medication use among elective hip and knee replacement patients.
The project focused on a number of areas to optimise medication use, including:
- Reducing variation in anaesthetic techniques
- Standardising post-operative analgesia
- Developing evidence based post-operative prescribing protocols
Henry Goss, Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust pharmacist, said: “The HSJ Value Awards have been an excellent opportunity to showcase the work of the team, and how this has driven improvement in care in a sustainable way.
“It is wonderful to be recognised at this level and the whole team is very proud of our success”
Another team from NDHT, the breast care team, narrowly missed out in the Cancer Care Initiative of the Year category for its entry ‘implementing a nurse led recovery package programme for breast cancer patients in a rural symptomatic unit’.
