Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust’s respiratory team is introducing a system of patient-initiated ‘open appointment’ waiting lists for patients who do not require a routine follow-up.
Instead of routine follow-up appointments, appropriate patients will have an ‘open appointment’. This means that if they develop a concern or problem related to their respiratory condition or its treatment, they can call to book an appointment to see a doctor.
The respiratory doctor will have informed the patient at their last appointment that they have an ‘open appointment’ and shared a patient information leaflet.
The Trust has introduced ‘open appointments’ to improve the service it offers patients. It means patients will not be asked to make unnecessary trips to the hospital at times when they are feeling perfectly well and symptom-free.
Respiratory consultant Dr Alison Moody said: “I’m really excited to be able to offer this change in service to our patients.
“‘Open appointments’ will reduce unnecessary visits to hospital and enable our clinical teams to see their patients at a time when they need it.”
Please note: ‘Open appointments’ are not suitable for all respiratory patients and if you have a respiratory appointment booked please ensure you attend. Respiratory doctors will be happy to discuss the option of an open appointment follow up within your next appointment.
