Nursing leaders in North Devon thanked nursing staff for their hard work and exceptional dedication during the COVID19 pandemic when they marked International Nurses Day yesterday, 12 May 2020.

In North Devon, events to mark the day included the Albert Clock in Barnstaple and Damien Hirst’s Verity sculpture in Ilfracombe being lit up blue, with support from Barnstaple Town Council and Ilfracombe Town Council. Everyone was encouraged to join in and ‘shine a light’ on nursing by lighting up their houses or wear blue clothing.

Georgina Carlo-Paat, the Ilfracombe Harbour Master worked with Val Gates, Ilfracombe Town Mayor to make this happen, with the help of Ilfracombe Town Council.  Jon Powell (JP Leisure) and Glen Hadley (EventRent) put the lighting and effects in place which included 24 spotlights, a smoke machine and the NHS emblem projected on the hill.

At North Devon District Hospital, a cherry tree, generously donated by St John’s Garden Centre, Barnstaple, was planted in the grounds to mark both the day and the year.

Chief nurse at Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust (NDHT), Darryn Allcorn, told staff:  “I would like to thank the nursing staff of Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust for the extraordinary commitment you have shown, not just during the recent period of the Covid-19 pandemic but throughout the year.

“We could not have met the challenges of recent times without your unstinting support, resilience and above all caring attitude”

Deputy chief nurse Lucy Bates added: “I’m extremely proud to be a nurse at NDHT and work with such a compassionate, kind, innovative, supportive and dedicated team of nurses across both our acute and community services. Today I would like to say a BIG thank you to all of you for your continued hard work, support to make nursing at NDHT great!”
