A new Business Academy has launched in North Devon, giving business students the opportunity to gain work experience in the NHS.
Since 2015, Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust (NDHT) and Petroc have been working in collaboration through the Health & Care Academy. A-Level and BTEC health and social care students gain 10 weeks of work experience in a variety of clinical settings, working and learning alongside NHS staff.
NDHT and Petroc are building on the success of this Academy to look at other workforce areas. In February they launched a new Business Academy.
Gail Richards, training manager and apprentice lead at Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust, said: “The NHS needs all kinds of different people with different skills, non-clinical as well as clinical. By hosting business students, we can show them the wide variety of career paths that suit their skills and are close to home.
“There are lots of opportunities to have an interesting, challenging and exciting career with the NHS. And you get to work with a fantastic bunch of people who make a difference to people’s lives every day. We’re looking forward to helping more students see this for themselves through the new Academy.”
The first Business Academy students started in February 2020. Over 10 weeks, various departments/teams host one student each week on a rotational basis.
