Congratulations to the diabetes specialist nurse team and pharmacy team, who have been commended at the Quality in Care (QiC) Diabetes 2018 awards.
The teams were shortlisted in the Diabetes Team Initiative of the Year (adults) category. This award recognises outstanding multidisciplinary team work that helps better prevent, diagnose or treat diabetes and improves the experience and outcomes for adults with diabetes and their loved ones.
The commendation was awarded for the teams’ project to improve insulin safety and reduce insulin wastage. Through the hard work of the teams, they reduced the monthly cost of wasted insulin by 85% and also improved patient safety – there was an initial increase in incident reporting due to raised awareness, followed by a reduction in insulin administration incidents.
The judges were really impressed with the entry and said: “This was a very well-written entry detailing an innovative project. The small team delivered big results and what the judges loved most is that its potential is enormous! The results were tangible, the methodology was great and the technical aspects were spot on.”
This project took a collaborative approach, involving the diabetes specialist nurse team, pharmacy team and ward staff. The engagement, enthusiasm and expertise of staff was key to its success – well done all.
