Door-to-door information to encourage people to speak up in Holsworthy and its parishes

A leaflet is to be delivered to every household in Holsworthy and the surrounding parishes to encourage people to have their say over local services.

The leaflet highlights how people can get involved in the pioneering Holsworthy Community Involvement Group project – a collaboration between local people and the NHS.

The group was set up in June and includes NHS representatives, Holsworthy’s  mayor, town district and county councillors, clergy and local other local representatives.

Its aim is to look at the healthcare needs of the area – and make recommendations as to future services.

Councillor Barry Parsons, who represents Holsworthy rural on Devon County Council and is a member of the group, said: “The NHS has said that it recognises that the town is in a remote location and that a bespoke solution to health and social care needs is necessary to address the issues we face.

“Much of this is hidden. Unpaid carers spend hours helping others in our community and this often goes unrecognised. The work of the 37-strong community health and care teams to care for people in their own homes is similarly overlooked. But they both work tirelessly day in, day out for our neighbours, friends and relatives.

“We want to understand people’s needs so that we can make wider recommendations to the NHS as to what serves our community needs.”

The leaflet, paid for by the Holsworthy’s League of Friends, will be delivered to more than 6,500 homes in the area from mid-August.

It will briefly highlight the group’s work and will advertise a survey in which local people’s views will be sought over local priorities:

  1. Loneliness/social isolation
  2. End of life care
  3. Support for carers and families
  4. Holsworthy Hospital services
  5. Services for young people and children
  6. Services within your own home
  7. Health information
  8. Travel and transport

Copies of the surveys will be made available from town and parish councils and other locations in the area from about mid-August.

However, it is the online version that will probably be easiest for people to fill in and the NHS says this is the preferred method of feedback as it reduces paperwork.

Once the surveys have been completed, returned and analysed, more in-depth work will take place with groups in the area to better understand the issues identified.

The group will then make recommendations in the form of a final report to be presented to NHS Northern, Eastern and Western Devon Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), which commissions healthcare services.

These recommendations, along with clinical, financial and logistical considerations, will then inform decisions about future services for wider community consideration.
