Today is a special day for the NHS, marking 70 years since the National Health Service began. At NDHT we have celebrated in lots of ways.
NHS70 charity family fun day was a hit – despite the weather!
We had an absolutely fantastic day on Sunday 1 July, despite the weather being against us, and it was great to see people dancing in the rain in true NHS community spirit!
All of our performers were amazing (amazing to see the Hospital Choir reform for a special performance), the food was delicious and we had great feedback about our hospital tours, which let people get behind the scenes to see how the hospital ran, see the pathology lab and take their teddy bear to get treated for a broken arm! We are hoping to run similar events in the future.
And to top it all off, we raised over £1,300 for Over and Above, which is fantastic.
Thank you to everyone who came along, to all our volunteers and to everyone who performed, had a stall or provided food and drink. We couldn’t put on amazing events like this without everybody’s ongoing support – thank you.
We celebrated with patients on our wards on 1 July with special cupcakes made by Sodexo staff. Here’s one patient on Staples Ward (Stroke Unit) enjoying his cupcake with a cuppa – he was very pleased!
Well done to our breast care team for making these fabulous scrumptious cakes for our NHS70 birthday celebrations. Pictured below are Tara Jones (who is also holding Beverley Short’s chocolate cake), Della Messenger, Karen Hillman and Amy Barrow.
Open days at the Tyrrell Hospital and South Molton Community Hospital
Leagues of Friends at the Tyrrell in Ilfracombe and South Molton Community Hospital are holding open days to celebrate.
Tyrrell Hospital – Saturday 7 July, 11am-4pm
South Molton Community Hospital – Saturday 21 July, 2pm-4.30pm
Come along and celebrate!
Staff in the finance team have created a pom pom board to mark NHS70. Doesn’t it look fantastic? A lot of hard work went into this, and after a little retouching following the rather wet charity family fun day on 1 July, we will be displaying it at NDDH. Keep an eye out for it!
We ran a school poster competition and received over 150 entries from primary school children depicting what the NHS might look like in the future. We have chosen the winners and will be displaying some of the posters in the near future – keep an eye out for them.
Come and sign our memory book, and encourage patients and visitors to do the same! You can find it at the Over and Above stand, level 2, NDDH.
If you can’t make it to NDDH, email your message for inclusion to email@example.com.
On Saturday 9 June, people took part in their local parkrun up and down the country to mark the 70th anniversary of the NHS.
North Devon was no exception – almost 500 people took part in parkruns in Barnstaple, Bideford and Tamar Lakes, a fantastic turnout! It was great to see lots of NDHT staff taking part.
