New online tour of North Devon District Hospital’s Ladywell Unit launched
Mums-to-be in North Devon can now take a tour of North Devon District Hospital’s maternity unit from the comfort of their own homes. That’s thanks to a new virtual tour launched by the highly-rated maternity department of Northern Devon Healthcare Trust.
The filmed virtual tour is available to watch for free, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, on the YouTube website. It will also soon be available on the Trust’s own website.
The new online film means that every expectant family can have a look round the facilities on offer – not just those who can come on a pre-arranged tour. Parents-to-be will be able to replay the film as many times as they want – and even to share it with family and friends if they wish.
Carolyn Mills, Director of Nursing, said: ‘In the past, we had to physically fit tours around the demands of the busy maternity unit. Caring for women and babies during labour is our first priority. This meant that we couldn’t always offer a complete tour to expectant parents and sometimes had to cancel at short notice if our midwives were needed urgently – which of course caused disappointment.
‘We’re proud of the choices we offer women and the virtual tour allows us to give mums-to-be a full tour of our facilities – from the fully-equipped en-suite delivery rooms to the comfortable postnatal ward – and of course our dedicated and friendly staff. It also means that we can give the most important information to everyone in a consistent way – regardless of whether they ask all the questions or not ’.
The film includes information such as what women should bring with them into hospital, what they can expect during labour and how staff will discuss choices with them.
All mums-to-be will be given the website address of the film during their antenatal appointments – but the video will be available to anyone looking for information on the internet.
