Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust will bring nearly all Barnstaple-based sexual health services brought together at the town’s health centre from Monday 10 November.
Family planning and genito-urinary medicine (GUM) are due to operate alongside each other on the site in Vicarage Street, with a joint reception and with laboratory back-up for analysis of samples.
Existing GUM clinics at Ilfracombe and Bideford community hospitals are not affected. They will continue to be held.
In parallel, an electronic system for storing and sharing notes will make it quicker and easier to bring up patients’ details, whether at Barnstaple or at one of the community clinics.
Until now, Barnstaple’s GUM service has been based in the Exmoor Unit at North Devon District Hospital. The space on Level 2 will be needed as the Trust begins major redevelopment for out-patient and emergency care.
