Wipeclean folders are being introduced at North Devon District Hospital this week (w/c 16 Aug) to provide comprehensive bedside information for all in-patients and their visitors.
The 34-page folders cover everything from staff uniforms and day-to-day life on the wards to bedside TVs and café opening times.
The folders are designed to make patients feel at home as quickly as possible when they arrive, and to ensure that their families and friends know how the hospital works.
They bring together a mass of information, much of which only exists in a series of separate leaflets. Pages will be updated regularly.
Every folder will be disinfected after the patient is discharged, as part of the ongoing campaign to minimise the risks of infection.
Carolyn Mills, Director of Nursing, said: “It’s all about making essential information as handy as possible for people when they arrive. Hospital can seem a strange place, with lots of different staff and new routines to get used to. The folders will help make things as simple as possible. How do we prevent blood-clots? When does the library trolley come? Where’s the chapel? What if you need a special diet? It’s all in there.”
Similar folders are being developed by Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust for its community hospitals.
