
General Information
Bideford Hospital is a 36-bedded community hospital, built in 1924 and extended several times, with the latest extension opened in 1994. We have two inpatient wards, Willow Community Unit and Elizabeth Ward.
Many different consultant out-patient clinics are held here, including general surgery, urology, orthopaedics, ear, nose & throat, ophthalmology, gastroenterology, cardiology, respiratory medicine, neurology, rheumatology, paediatrics, geriatric medicine and gynaecology. Many nurse-led specialist clinics are also held here.
Other services include:
- Minor Injuries Unit, open daily from 7.30am to 8.30pm.
- X-ray Department, open 9am to 5pm Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, and 2-5pm Friday
- Physiotherapy
- Occupational therapy
- Podiatry
- Speech & language therapy for both children and adults
- Children’s orthoptic (eye) service
- Sexual health clinics
The Bideford Complex Care Team is also based here.

Visiting times
We welcome visitors:
- Willow Community Unit – 2pm to 4.30pm and 6pm to 8.30pm daily
- Elizabeth Ward – 2.30pm to 4.30pm (except Wednesdays) and 6pm to 8.30pm
Volunteer services
WRVS volunteers bring a library trolley around on a weekly basis.
Phones
There is a payphone in the outpatient waiting area for patients to make calls to friends and family, so please be sure to bring change. On Willow Ward, the cordless phone can also be taken to patients if there are incoming calls.
Parking
On-site parking is free, but very limited.
League of Friends
Bideford Hospital League of Friends plays an important role in supporting the hospital. Members raise money for ‘extras’ to support patients.
